Asschatterkeerkade - Leusden

The Asschatterkeerkade is an impressive part of the Grebbelinie and has been winding through the landscape of Leusden since 1745. With a length of 2.5 kilometres and visible traces from different periods, from French fortifications to concrete bunkers from 1940, this place tells the story of defence and conflict.

An extensive survey was required to create the Asschatterkeerkade. Many levelling measurements were carried out beforehand. The hamlet of Asschat proved suitable due to the presence of a sandy ridge. This natural elevation created a kind of water divide that functioned more or less naturally.

In the middle of the embankment lies the striking “seven-embrazure bunker”, a bunker with seven firing openings. Remains of anti-tank obstacles can also still be seen.

Today you cycle through a quiet nature area where birds, bats and other wildlife have found their place. Among the greenery, a monument and the landscape itself remind you of the events that once took place here.
