On the edge of Veenendaal stands Windmill De Vriendschap (The Friendship), a smock mill with nearly 150 years of history. Flour is still milled here in a traditional way.

This octagonal smock mill was built in 1872 within the built-up area of the village. The mill had to rise above the rooftops of the houses, otherwise it would not be high enough to catch sufficient wind. To operate the tall mill, a stage was built. That is why it is called a smock mill: the sails can only be reached by the miller via this stage.

The mill contains a milling floor and a stone floor. Both floors have their own specific function and house essential parts of the mill.

During a visit you discover how the mill works, learn from the miller and explore the different floors. The unique construction and the story behind the mill make this an interesting stop along your route across the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. There is also plenty to enjoy for children.
