Europeans have always loved spices from the East Indies and still do. They were willing to pay a lot for spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and black pepper. These mills grind the spices into fine powder and sell them in small shakers.

Originally De Lelie and De Ster had the same function. De Lelie dates from 1777 and De Ster from 1828. De Ster has been rebuilt twice due to fire. These mills are also known as snuff mills. The nickname comes from grinding snuff tobacco, which no longer takes place.

Originally De Lelie operated until 1921 and had six pounding vats; the sixth vat had to make way for an electric motor, which drove the main shaft. During a major restoration in 1970, when the foundation was renewed and the mill was straightened and jacked up, the electric drive was removed from the mill.
