The Hoenderwiel in Meerkerk is created after a dike breach in the 17th century. To the north of the village gave the dike way, after which the water free play got. When the situation again under control was, remained there a deep pool behind: a silent memory of the violence of the water.
In the course of time has the nature the area taken over. The water and the surrounding banks form now a suitable place for birds to forage and to breed. Thereby has the Hoenderwiel a new function received; from disaster area to resting place for nature.
