The Kampen horse mill - Kampen

N 52.55938 / E 5.9153

In the mid-19th century, there were around 1,300 horse mills in the Netherlands, mills powered by horses. Of these, only one example with its upper structure has been preserved: the horse mill in the Gotisch Huis in Kampen, which was part of the Stedelijk Museum until 2009. This mill, which already existed in 1699, was used for grinding buckwheat. Due to the limited wear of the millstones, the interior has retained a rare and authentic character. The mill consists of a horse track, grinding mechanisms and a drying loft, and is unique because of its age and distinctive components.

After nearly a century of neglect, the mill was restored by the Government Buildings Agency and the municipality of Kampen.
