This area is located near Serooskerke. De Schelphoek was formed during the flood disaster of 1953. The breach in the dike initially seemed limited, but in the months after the disaster it only grew larger. In the photo you see De Schelphoek, largely under water. Here and there, a few rooftops and treetops still rise above the water.

At the time, a ring dike was constructed around the area, closed with caissons. The last caisson rises above the dike and forms a fine viewpoint. From here you can still see the old dike, with the enormous breach from 1953.

Thanks to the salt in the creek, it almost never freezes over. Even in winter you can therefore spot water birds here. There is a good chance you will see the little grebe diving for food.
