Megen, Maasbommel, Lith

Enjoy cycling along the Meuse. Besides the abundance of water, there is much else to see along the way, such as the historic fortified town of Megen.

If at Lith you think: 'This looks familiar', you have probably seen Fons Rademakers' film 'Dorp aan de rivier'. Hella Haasse's book 'Schaduwbeeld or the secret of Appeltern' was set in the castle of the town of the same name. Only a few outbuildings of the castle have survived. The castle in Megen fared even worse: it was razed to the ground in 1581. All that remains of the town walls is the prison gate. Macharen belonged to the county of Megen, but is now part of the municipality of Oss.

Please note: you will encounter ferries along this route. The ferry between Demen and Batenburg does not operate year-round. Check the stop for current sailing times.

Are you cycling the route when the ferry is not operating? Then follow the detour from junction 1 via 41, 18, 02, 87 and 69, and rejoin the route at junction 73. Or follow the reverse if you are cycling in the opposite direction. The route will then be approximately 11 kilometres longer.
