Combine your city trip in vibrant Maastricht with this calming cycling route. Along the way, you pass through several well-known and lesser-known villages, each with their own charm. Swap the city for green hills towards the Bemelerberg. In this area, you’ll come across surprising traces that show South Limburg’s connection to marlstone. On the hill, you’ll find a marl cave and suddenly cycle past historical lime kilns. In Margraten, you can visit the American cemetery, the only one in the Netherlands. From Margraten, you cycle towards the historic town of Valkenburg. Here too, there are many sights inspired by the past that took place largely underground. For example, the Coal Mine, where you get a glimpse of the life of former miners. And of course the Velvet Cave, one of the many caves in this region. Follow the river Geul back to the heart of Maastricht through beautiful estates. A wonderful cycle route to get some fresh air for a day!
